Brutiful World
Brandon Cook
We did not see the battle nor the broken wings
The beaks, the talons, the shrieking,
We only stumbled unaware into the earthward clearing, heedless of any bloodshed
Surprised instead by serendipity:
Four perfect feathers, blue and black and white
So very pleased, we marveled at the beauty of a world that could give us something so alluring, lain as gift at our unsuspecting feet
When we know brutality lurks on every side, unseen
In earth, and sky, and sea
